Eat  one's  head  off

　　這個成語字面上看頗有點離奇。一個人怎麼會吃得頭都掉下來了呢？對它的出典，沒有十分確實的說法，只能作些猜測。它原來大概是描述一些動物，尤其是鳥類，吃個不停，以致最後連頭都垂下了( eat until one's head drops off )，逐漸演變成 eat one's head off 這樣的表達方式。 不論它是怎麼產生的，它現在的意義是清楚的，即 " 吃得很多 "。 現在它不僅可用於動物，也可以用於人。自然，這並不是一種很恭敬的說法：

         I do not know that he keeps two horses in the stable，doing nothing but eating their heads off.
　　我不知道他在馬槽�媥i了兩匹什麼事也不干，��飽食終日的馬。

         Father had a hard time to provide for a big family with three growing boys，all whom ate their heads off.
　　父親要維持一個大家庭很不容易，其中還有三個正在發育的男孩，吃��東西來，胃口驚人。

        Faced with a table of goodies they forgot their table manners and ate their heads off.
　　面對一桌美食，他們顧不得什麼吃相，大吃��來。
